VCU Yad by Linda Gissen

A Yad, meaning "hand," is a religious pointer used when reading the Torah, the Jewish sacred scrolls.  Shaped like a hand with the forefinger pointing to the words, it symbolizes God's hand directing the reader.  To preserve the historical and spiritual value of the Torah, the Yad allows the reader to follow the wording without touching it.  Usually the Yad is made of precious material, such as ivory or silver.
